Offence of the month – Drink driving, drug driving and alcohol offences

$

It’s December already and for many people it’s a time of work related Christmas parties, annual holidays and festive season celebrations so the temptation to drink drive or drug drive might be increased. Don’t do it. Catch a taxi, a bus, a limo, walk or pre-arrange a designated sober driver. Why would you risk spoiling the month and New Year with a conviction, hefty fine and loss of licence for drink driving or drug driving, when you could have decided not to take the risk?

December is also a time of more road users, so in our relentless bid to reduce death and injury on the roads, Gold Coast Police will be significantly ramping up efforts to keep locals and visitors safe. We will be stepping up our breath testing and drug testing and it will be anywhere and any time. Speeding, inattention, not wearing a seatbelt and driving while fatigued make up the rest of the Fatal Five so we won’t lose focus on those. As well as more police being anywhere at any time we are using covert and marked mobile speed cameras, marked and unmarked police patrols, fixed speed cameras, hand-held speed detection devices, the automatic number plate recognition systems, breath testing and drug testing devices. Gold Coast Police will also be supported by Police from other areas.

The message is simple; stop and think about what your family would do without you this Christmas and every Christmas to come, before you take risks on the road. So remember, road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

QPSBaublesThe Gold Coast District Crime Prevention Unit (DCPC) and Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) would like to wish the Gold Coast community a very happy and safe festive season.

For those of you planning to go away on holidays, please find below a list of steps that can be taken to give your home that “lived in” look, thus reducing the chance of a break & enter offence occurring.

Before you go away on holidays please consider the following:

  • Trim plants and trees around your home
  • Move wheelie bins from underneath windows
  • Install automatic light timers or sensor activated lights and leave a light on when you go out
  • Ask a neighbour to collect your mail and take your rubbish out while you’re gone
  • Make sure your garage or garden shed is locked and your letterbox is secured
  • Make sure it is difficult for potential robbers to gain entry to your home and/or difficult to leave with your property and re-sell it
  • Make sure your home has working locks, bolts, bars, and security screens. If an offender does get into your home make sure it is hard for them to get out with your property by having key locked windows and double cylinder deadlocks
  • Have your property engraved or micro-dotted to make it easier for police to identify if it is stolen and someone tries to re-sell it
  • If going out, even for a short period of time, make your home look “lived in” by putting your radio or lights on timers
  • There are many security products on the market to help you feel secure, consider installing one and remember to always use it

Senior Constable Kurt Foessel from the Elanora Police Beat reports the following:

On the December 16, 2013 the ‘Community by the Sea’ event was conducted at the Palm Beach Parklands, or what is affectionately known to locals as ‘The Pirate Park’ due to the large pirate ship playground near the lagoon.

This is the 5th year the event has been conducted and is a great effort involving the collaboration of a number of community groups. Overseeing the night was the Elanora Police Beat who attends the many committee and planning meetings through the year to ensure the safety and success of the event.

Despite the continuous threat of rain the event saw a large crowd of people estimated at 3000 attend the venue. Ron Workman from the Currumbin RSL is the committee chairman and was very pleased with the outcome of the event and thankfully with the assistance of the Currumbin VMR the fireworks were able to go ahead.

Senior Constable Foessel said it was a real testimony of the community coming together, and he was amazed at the number of people who volunteered their time to make the event a success and the number of sponsors who contributed their time, staff and funds.

A raffle was held and the proceeds went to Youth Music Venture led by Ian Grace a local charity organisation supporting young people. It was also a real treat to see the behaviour of families and people enjoying themselves without any drunken disturbances. The continued partnership between police and the community will ensure the future of this outstanding community event.

Gold Coast Police continue focus on assaults and crimes of violence

Gold Coast police will continue to focus on assaults and crimes of violence in the city with particular attention to entertainment precincts including Surfers Paradise.

District Officer Acting Chief Superintendent Des Lacy said that low tolerance will be given to those people who behave in an unacceptable manner with a focus on acts of alcohol induced violence.

“Our aim is ultimately to make the Gold Coast one of Australia’s safest cities within which to live, work, visit and do business. This can only be achieved through working with our various community partners, the Gold Coast community other government agencies and the Gold Coast City Council”, Acting Chief Superintendent Lacy said today.

In announcing the establishment of Gold Coast City Council’s Mayor Tom Tate’s “Safer Suburbs Forum”, police will commence work immediately with the Gold Coast City Council and other government agencies to reduce the number of alcohol related assaults and crimes of violence.”

“Any form of violence by one person against another in the Gold Coast community is unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. Police will prefer the most serious charges possible against anyone who uses violent behaviour towards another person.

“Anyone who behaves in an anti-social manner towards other members of the community, such as acting aggressively or in an intimidatory manner, can expect to be dealt with to the full extent of the law,” he said.

Acting Chief Superintendent Lacy said that depending on the nature of the conduct, offenders can expect to be arrested, fingerprinted, photographed and processed through the police watchhouse.

“As part of our overall focus of alcohol and violence, police will also be focusing on anyone who maliciously damages property belonging to the city and to other individuals.

“A low tolerance approach will be taken with people consuming alcohol in a public place, which attracts a $110 fine.

Acting Chief Superintendent Lacy said police will be targeting premises where alcohol-related aggression most often occurs.

“Considerable attention will be given to the enforcement of Liquor License Conditions particular regulations relating to the Responsible Service of Alcohol.

“If you have preloaded with alcohol, are intent on drinking in public places or involved in underage drinking you can expect to be dealt with by the police.

“Those intent on behaving anti-socially should carefully consider the consequences of their actions: a criminal history can restrict employment opportunities; travel to some countries; criminal offence matters are normally heard in open court and adverse publicity can affect both lives and reputations,” warned Acting Chief Superintendent Lacy.

“We want people to enjoy themselves when they have a night out but caution people against drinking to excess and behaving in a manner which could result in life-long adverse consequences”.

No Free Ride for Property Offenders

In recent times a number of break & enter offences have been reported whereby the offender has gained access to the dwelling via the garage.  In the event you have an internal door dividing these two spaces, please ensure this door is key locked.  If you don’t have a lock, it’s a great idea to get one fitted!

In addition, when parking your vehicle in your garage, please ensure the vehicle is locked and the keys are put inside somewhere out of sight i.e. in a draw.  In some instances when a dwelling is broken into, offenders are decamping from that location in the victim’s vehicle.

And please remember, if you’re thinking about hiding your house keys under pot plants or door mats located near your front door, believe me when I say this is not an original idea!

On February 5, Operation Lima Kingsnake was conducted by police in the southern Gold Coast area targeting drug activity.  Search warrants were executed by police at five homes, resulting in the seizure of quantities of Methylamphetamine and Cannabis.

This operation saw police uncover a cannabis hydroponic system, and 12 offenders were arrested by police on 34 drug related charges including Production of a Dangerous Drug, Possess of a Dangerous Drug, Possession of Drug Utensils and Possession of Property used in Connection with a Drug Offence.

“These actions are part of our broader strategy in targeting criminal behaviour on the Gold Coast.  We urge any member of the public who has information concerning the use, sale or manufacture of illicit drugs to come forward to police and provide that information.  We consistently and tragically see that drugs destroy lives and their links to broader criminal offending” said Senior Sergeant Chris Ahearn, Officer in Charge of Palm Beach Police Station.

Are you Streetwise?

$
0
0

In recent months, a number of robbery offences have been reported to the Police whereby the offender/s have demanded from the victim their personal property such as wallets and mobile phones.

These offences are being committed on the streets and at train stations during the afternoon and late at night.  Often offenders of these types of offences target intoxicated persons, or people they perceive as vulnerable and likely to offer the least resistance.

When out and about we suggest the following:

  • Appear confident, self assured and comfortable in your surroundings through strong, positive body language.  Look “streetwise” rather than fearful.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and alert to what is going on around you.
  • Listen to, trust and act on your instincts.  If you sense danger from someone, something or a place, immediately remove yourself to a safer place.
  • Do what you think will best preserve your safety.  Options include running away, screaming, negotiating with the attacker, calling for assistance, and using physical self defence as a last resort.
  • Don’t put up a fight for your bag or other possessions.  If someone threatens you and tries to steal your belongings, the safest option is to surrender the items.  Take note of the offender’s description and/or vehicle and immediately report the incident to police.

Remember, everyone has the right to feel safe!
