Students from Upper Coomera State College with acting Senior Constable Brendan Stokes

Acting Senior Constable Brendan Stokes reports:

Friday, October 25 marked “Day for Daniel” at Upper Coomera State College (UCSC) with many students dressing in red to show their support for this growing initiative. Wear Red and Educate is the theme for Day for Daniel, which is celebrated by schools, kindergartens, businesses and communities across Australia to honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.

The students pictured above were selected to participate in a ‘Walk for Daniel,’ in which the students walked down to the nearby Upper Coomera Community Centre. The students were well received by locals and passing motorists who showed their support in various ways.

Once at the community centre the students were addressed by the UCSC school based police officer, acting Senior Constable Brendan Stokes.

Acting Senior Constable Stokes spoke to the students to empower them to ‘Recognise,’ ‘React,’ and ‘Report,’ the keywords identified by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation as being fundamental to child safety.

Please speak with your children about these three important skills as the QPS and Daniel Morcombe Foundation continue to promote a safer community for children.

Assaults on police officers not tolerated

Police will not tolerate assaults on its members after three officers were assaulted in Townsville last night.

Commissioner Ian Stewart said he had had enough of his officers being used as punching bags.

“In the lead up to Christmas, we will see an increase in social activities and we want this to be a safe and happy season for all, including police officers.

“Police officers, like any other employee should not be subjected to assaults in their workplace. It’s unacceptable and we will aim to prosecute any person who assaults or obstructs a police officer while they are carrying out their duties.

“Police are being kicked, punched, spat at and bitten as they routinely attempt to resolve incidents they are called to.

“I am grateful for increased penalties from the Government for assaults on police.

“While there has been a slight decrease in assaults on police in Townsville this year, any incident is unacceptable.”

Last night in Townsville two police officers attended a disturbance on Flinders Street when both were assaulted. A female police officer was allegedly kicked in the face and sustained a cut to her right eye. She attended Townsville Hospital.

Three women were charged with serious assault and obstruct police offences.

In a separate incident in Townsville, around 5pm yesterday a 64-year-old man allegedly kicked a police officer in the chest after he had been restrained.

“Police will be taking a tough stance. If you assault a police officer, verbally or physically, in any situation you can expect to be charged with an offence that carries serious penalties,” Commissioner Stewart said.
