On July 25 Southport State High School held a Youth Expo for its students. As a part of this day, School Based Police Officer, Acting Senior Constable Dianne McIntyre facilitated a “Responsible Drinking” activity incorporating the use of Gold Coast District Crime Prevention Unit recently acquired “Keep It In Focus” kit.  In addition to a brief talk about responsible drinking of alcohol, senior students were invited to complete a series of small exercises while wearing impairment goggles, otherwise known as “Beer Goggles”.

The goggles allow the wearer to look through intoxicated eyes with a sober mind and through the completion of a series of reaction, balance and target tasks provide a surprising and impactful perspective on the dangers of alcohol consumption, particularly in relation to driving a vehicle.

Students and teachers participated in the activity and positive feedback and enthusiasm  was high amongst student.IMG_2093

South Eastern Regional Police continued their enforcement activities throughout the entertainment precincts over the weekend, targeting Drink and Drug Drivers, Public Order, Drug Possession and OMCG members.

Over 120 police were tasked over three days to take part in the regional operation resulting in over 100 arrests ranging from public order offences, drug possession and theft of motor vehicles.

OMCG members were not missed during the operation, with a number of members intercepted by police and charges including drug driving and other traffic related offences preferred.

What remains disturbing for police is the fact that 49 drink drivers and 15 drug drivers were intercepted over two nights, with readings as high as .182%. There were also positive indications regarding drug use.

Police want to reinforce the message that impaired driving will continue to be a constant focus of police activity.

Police are reminding everyone during the month of September to adhere to the sign posted and regulated speed limits in and around the Gold Coast.

Police will be undertaking checks to coincide with the School Holidays and are asking all motorists to obey the 40km/h zone in and around our schools. Speeding is still a major contributing factor to serious and fatal traffic crashes and adhering to the speed limits is the best way to keep you and your family safe.

With the large amount of roadwork’s in and around the Gold Coast it is also vitally important that the sign posted speed limit is obeyed for the safety of all those working around the road works site.

Remember, road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Heading to the beach this summer – secure your car and valuables

Mounted Unit - Palm Beach

A mounted police patrol at Palm Beach

With the summer months approaching police wish to remind beachgoers not to be complacent with their vehicle security by leaving valuables on display in their cars when parked at the beach. With greater volumes of traffic heading to the beach in summer unsecured cars with attractive items easily visible in the console or on the front seat become targets for crime. Items such as handbags, sunglasses or ipads are highly attractive to opportunistic thieves.

To target this type of criminal activity police will stage targeted patrols of beachside areas throughout the summer, such as the operation conducted today in the beachside areas of Burleigh Heads, Tallebudgera and Palm Beach.

Acting Inspector Chris Ahearn of the Southern Patrol Group said the operation was designed to improve security at the beach.

“Today’s operation was aimed at providing a high visibility police prescence around the many beachside carparks we have, utilising police on horseback, on foot and in vehicles. As summer arrives we will be increasing the focus on property security in our beachside areas.”

Police are urging beachgoers to:

  • Lock their vehicles
  • Place valuables out of sight
  • Secure car keys in a safe place
  • Be vigilant and report suspicious activity to police

Don’t turn a blind eye to crime prevention. Remember, lock it or you may lose it.
